Gov. Phil Murphy has job approval ratings of 46%-43%, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released this morning.
The poll shows a slight drop by Murphy since January, when his approvals were at 46%-40%. He was at 44%-37% in October.
Murphy remains hugely popular among Democrats, with same-party approvals of 80%-12%. He’s upside-down among Republicans (10%-82%), and independents (25%-52%).
He’s at 79%-14% among self-described liberals, 74%-18% among progressives, 54%-35% among moderates, and upside-down at 22%-71% among conservatives.
Dan Cassino, the FDU poll director, noted that the unsuccessful U.S. Senate bid of First Lady Tammy Murphy has not affected how New Jersey Democrats feel about the governor.
“It might be that progressives in the state were angry at the First Lady, or at the institutional Democratic Party,” Cassino said. “But if they are, they’re not taking it out on the Governor.”
Murphy is almost midway through his seventh year as governor. He is term-limited and will leave office in January 2026.
A Fairleigh Dickinson poll from October 2016 put Gov. Chris Christie’s approvals at 21%=72%.
The poll was conducted between April 1-9 with a sample size of 809 registered voters in New Jersey and a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.
