Senate Law and Public Safety chair calls Murphy nominee ‘well respected, fair minded’

Senate Law and Public Safety Committee Chair Linda Greenstein (D-Plainsboro) will support Matt Platkin for attorney general.

Gov. Phil Murphy announced the nomination of Platkin, his former chief counsel, this morning.

“Matt Platkin is an excellent choice for Attorney General by Governor Murphy,” Greenstein said.  “Matt is well respected, fair minded and has a sharp legal mind.  The Office of Attorney General will be in good hands with Matt at the helm.”

Greenstein becomes the seventh state senator to applaud Murphy’s decision to name Platkin, a partner at Lowenstein Sandler.  She joins four Democrats – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Brian Stack (D-Union) City, Senate Majority Conference Leader Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch), Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo (D-Wood-Ridge), and Gordon Johnson (D-Englewood) – and two Republicans: Deputy Minority Leader Bob Singer (R-Lakewood) and Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Platkin will succeed Andrew Bruck, who became acting attorney general last July after Gurbir Grewal resigned to join the staff of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.    Bruck had been a finalist for the post, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamel Semper and Assemblyman John F. McKeon (D-West Orange).
