Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop will headline a fundraiser in three weeks to boost the chances of Christine Clarke for State Senate in the 25th district.
Clarke, the Jefferson Democratic municipal chair, is challenging Senate Minority Leader Anthony M. Bucco in a district that hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1993.
The lone announced candidate for the 2025 Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Fulop has already made some inroads into Morris County. He has the endorsement of Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty, who is hosting the Clarke fundraiser, and Chatham Mayor Thad Kobylarz – both from the congressional district of another likely candidate, Rep. Mikie Sherrill.
The fundraiser is at the Washington Township home of Robin Gurin, who was ousted as Morris County Democratic vice chair in 2022 as part of a shakeup of the county organization.
Bucco is a tough out for Democrats, who mounted strong efforts to beat him in 2017, 2019, and 2020.
In a 2020 special election, Bucco set the record for the most votes ever received by a candidate for the legislature since 1973, when New Jersey moved to a 40-district map.
The last Democrat to win the 25th was Gordon MacInnes, who unseated Senate Majority Leader John Dorsey in 1993. Bucco’s late father, Anthony R. Bucco, unseated MacInnes in 1997.
