Essex County Commissioner A’Dorian Murray-Thomas endorsed Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for governor Wednesday morning.
A former school board member from Newark, Murray-Thomas said the mayor has improved economic opportunity and equity in the city and would bring the same vision and commitment to the Garden State.
“Newark is in the midst of a renaissance because of Mayor Ras Baraka’s leadership,” Murray-Thomas said in a release. “From reimagining public safety and investing in affordable housing to expanding access to homeownership and fostering local businesses, he has proven time and again that bold ideas and collaborative leadership can lift all boats.”
Murray-Thomas represents the Newark-based District 2 on the Essex County Commission. She won the organization line to be commissioner in March 2023, when she was a 27-year-old school board official.
“Newark is a testament to what is possible when we invest in people and prioritize equity,” Murray-Thomas said. “Mayor Baraka’s vision aligns with the values we hold dear in Essex County and across New Jersey. He has the courage to tackle the challenges of today and the foresight to prepare for the opportunities of tomorrow.”
Baraka is one of three Essex County Democrats running for governor. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has been endorsed by the other eight county commissioners from Essex.
