DGA readies to spend $20 million to boost Sherrill

Democratic Governors Association reserves TV, streaming and digital ads in N.J. governor’s race

A super PAC connected to the Democratic Governors Association has reserved more than $20 million in TV, streaming, and digital ads for the general election as they prepare to support their nominee, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, in what is expected to be a competitive general election.

Greater Garden State put a hold on TV airtime to lock in lower prices and reserve preferential ad inventory in a season that will include big spending by Republican Jack Ciattarelli, as well as the New York City mayoral race in the New York media market.

“The DGA is committed to holding New Jersey’s governorship and making sure that voters up and down the Garden State understand the stakes of this election,” stated Jordy Zeigler, the DGA political director.  ““While Mikie Sherrill stays relentlessly focused on bringing down costs, putting more money in people’s pockets, and keeping New Jersey moving forward, Jack Ciattarelli has pledged to bring Donald Trump’s chaos and extremism to Trenton.”

The Republican Governors Association has yet to decide whether to help Ciattarelli.  In 2021, the RGA reserved approximately $10 million in airtime for Ciattarelli but ultimately failed to provide the funds.  Ciattarelli lost that race by three percentage points.  Former Gov. Chris Christie, a former RGA chairman, had told the organization that Ciattarelli could not win.

Term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy, who has endorsed Sherrill, twice chaired the DGA.

On Friday night, Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy is hosting a high-dollar dinner at his Middletown home with former President Barack Obama to raise money for the Democratic National Committee.  Much of that haul is expected to be spent in New Jersey.
