Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli expects to pick a running mate before the end of the month.
“I’ve been working very hard and have narrowed down the list to a few individuals I continue to engage with,” Ciattarelli said during an appearance on the New Jersey Globe Power Hour on Talk Radio 77 WABC on Saturday. “We’ll have an announcement sometime before the end of June.
Ciattarelli has not ruled choosing a white male for the post.
“I was asked recently if you’d guarantee us that your lieutenant governor would be a person of color or a female. I immediately said that my lieutenant governor will be competent, Ciattarelli said. “I take very seriously the responsibility of picking someone who can step in and do the job if something were to happen to me.”
The winner of Tuesday’s Republican primary has until July 22 to publicly announce his choice, but Ciattarelli’s statement reflects a preparedness to expedite his selection.
Gov. Phil Murphy has made it clear that he will run with Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver in his bid for a second term.
