Jack Ciattarelli called on Gov. Phil Murphy to pull back an executive order shutting down New Jersey’s state and county parks the governor signed Tuesday.
“Listen, we get it. Shelter in place and safe social distancing are key to flattening the curve, so is mental health.” The Republican gubernatorial candidate said in a video posted to Twitter. “For many people, our state and county parks are critically important outlets, especially in our urban and high-density areas.”
The governor issued the order over concerns that residents were congregating at parks despite a previous order banning all gatherings in an attempt to blunt the continued spread of COVID-19.
Local parks may remain open under the order, though some municipalities have already directed their parks closed..
“Is there no way for people to enjoy passive recreation while steadfastly observing safe social distancing?” Ciattarelli said. “Must we punish those who are perfectly compliant with the rules? Are we going to close supermarkets next?”
