Brian Sicknick’s brother endorses Mikie Sherrill

The brother of fallen U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, a New Jerseyan who died one day after protestors stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, has endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Craig Sicknick, a resident of Middlesex County, became politically active after his brother’s death.  He sharply criticized President Donald Trump for pardoning over 1,500 people charged for their roles on January 6.

“I’m doing everything I can to honor the life of my brother, Brian,” Sicknick said.  “Now, President Trump just pardoned those who attacked my brother and took his life — a gut punch not only to my family and other Capitol Police officers, but also to the rule of law.”

With Trump in the White House, Sicknick says, “I know we need a governor with the backbone to stand up for New Jersey and our values, and that’s Mikie Sherrill.”

“Mikie is somebody that is unafraid to speak truth to power — and her loyalty has always been to country and Constitution,” he said.  “Mikie has the integrity, vision, and courage to guide New Jersey through these next few years, and I’m proud to support her in the Democratic Primary.”

Last year, Sicknick smacked Sherrill’s opponent in the 11th district congressional race, Joseph Belnome, for participating in the January 6 protest.

Sherrill was also endorsed by Harry Dunn, a former Capitol Police Officer who was on duty on January 6 and later became an outspoken critic of the protest and witness at congressional hearings.  (Dunn also ran for Congress in Maryland last year but finished second in the Democratic primary.)

“Mikie believes in accountability, transparency, and ultimately delivering for people, because that’s what public service is about,” Dunn said.  “With the lawlessness already coming from Trump’s Washington, we need to rise to this moment as a country and it’s on us to elect strong Democratic governors like Mikie who will be on the front lines protecting our rights and freedoms.”
