The Asbury Park Press has endorsed Democrat Andy Kim for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district against two-term Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River).
“MacArthur, a staunch conservative, has never pretended to be anything other than a staunch conservative. But that conservatism has manifested itself in votes that have not served most of his constituents well,” the editorial board wrote. “MacArthur has tried to distance himself from Trump during the campaign, but his actions speak louder than words. And he has failed, as have most Republicans in Congress, to call out Trump for his divisive rhetoric.”
The newspaper called out MacArthur for his attacks on Kim.
“Most of the attacks don’t hold up to close scrutiny. He has accused Kim, a former director of Iraq for the National Security Council during the Obama administration, of inflating his resume and of operating a website that promoted the books of left-wing extremists,” the APP wrote.
“Kim, son of South Korean immigrants, is a Rhodes scholar who earned a doctorate in international relations at Oxford. He has experience as a military and national security adviser. He is smart, and he is no extremist, unless you consider opposing Trump’s policies on taxes, health care and deregulation of consumer and environmental protections as radical.”
