A former Scarlet Knights baseball star who played third base for the New York Yankees and another area team is applauding the appointment of Bill Castner as the new Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Rutgers University.

“Congratulations to new President Bill Tate for hiring Bill Castner Jr. as his EVP and General Counsel of my alma mater, Rutgers University,” Frazier said.  “I have known the Castner family for 30 years and am thrilled a fellow Little League alum from Toms River is gearing up to help out Rutgers. Welcome back to the Banks, Bill.”

Frazier led the Toms River East Little League to a 1998 World Series championship and broke the all-time home run record for Rutgers in 2007, when he was named First Team All-America; he was drafted in the first round of the MLB draft.  A two-time All-Star, Frazier won the 2015 MLB All-Star Game Home Run Derby and won a silver medal with Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.  He played for six major league teams, including the Yankees, Mets, and Castner’s favorite team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Toms River relationships run deep.  Castner’s father, Bill Castner Sr., coached Frazier as a teenager on the Toms River Black Sox. The major league field at the Toms River East Little League complex is named “Castner Field” after Bill and Diane Castner, longtime volunteers at the Little League.

Castner, Jr. was inducted into the Toms River Regional Schools Hall of Fame in 2013.  Until recently, he was a part-owner of the Staten Island Ferryhawks minor league baseball team.
