The national arm of the Working Families Party (WFP), a major progressive group, has endorsed one of its own for New Jersey’s 7th congressional district: Sue Altman, who before becoming a congressional candidate was the state director for the New Jersey WFP.
“Sue Altman has been a fearless fighter for New Jersey’s working families, and we’re thrilled to have Sue’s back in her biggest fight yet,” Antoinette Miles, Altman’s successor as state director, said in a statement. “The path to ending Mike Johnson’s extremist majority in the House of Representatives runs through beating Tom Kean Jr. in the 7th District. We’re going to let voters through the district know that a vote for Sue Altman is the best way to protect our freedoms and make Congress work for working people.”
While it’s far from a surprise that Altman has gotten the backing of her own former organization, the WFP’s endorsement formally connects her with a substantial nationwide progressive network.
Altman faces two Democratic opponents for the 7th district Democratic nomination: former U.S. State Department official Jason Blazakis and Summit Council President Greg Vartan. The winner will go up against Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) in what’s likely to be New Jersey’s most competitive general election next year.
