One of the state’s most influential labor leaders has praised Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York) for his leadership in passing legislation to stimulate the economy during the coronavirus pandemic.
“When Sires voted to pass the much-needed HEROES Act, the heroes on the front lines in New Jersey were on his mind. So were families struggling because of the coronavirus economic crisis,” said New Jersey AFL-CIO president Charles Wowkanech. “The HEROES Act addresses the challenges so many New Jersey working families are struggling with supporting programs for workers, the unemployed, renters , small businesses, health care systems and more.”
Wowkanech also saluted the eight-term congressman for co-sponsoring the Justice in Policing Act to curb racial bias in policing.
“This kind of courageous leadership is a Sires hallmark,” Wowkanech said.
Sires, a former Assembly Speaker and West New York mayor, faces a primary challenge on July 7 from Hector Oseguera and Will Sheehan.
