Star-Ledger prefers Kim ‘by far’ in 3rd district race

Left-leaning editorial board calls Healey ‘wildly unqualified’

The Star-Ledger endorsed Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) for re-election to New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district this morning, praising the two-term Democratic congressman for his legislative record and his strong moral compass.

“Kim is the better candidate by any measure, and his voters [seem] to know it,” the newspaper’s editorial board wrote. “The 3rd district is lucky to have such dedicated and principled member of Congress.”

The editorial drew specific attention to Kim’s actions following the attack on the U.S. Capitol in January 2021; Kim went viral the morning after the attack for quietly cleaning up debris strewn about the Rotunda.

“It is fashionable these days to dismiss politicians as cynical and corrupt, and many of them deserve the disdain,” the board wrote. “But Kim is a patriot in the best sense of the word.”

As it has taken to doing in endorsements this cycle, the editorial board also reserved several paragraphs for savaging Kim’s Republican opponent, Viking Yachts CEO Bob Healey, writing that he isn’t qualified for Congress and that he wouldn’t sufficiently protect abortion.

“[Healey] is a wildly unqualified candidate with no record of public service or significant personal accomplishments,” the board wrote. “Healey turns down every invitation to discuss the issues in greater depth – even those where Republicans have an edge, like crime and inflation. He is light as a feather.”

Kim also got the Star-Ledger’s endorsement in his two previous campaigns for Congress in 2018 and 2020.

Kim is the third Democratic representative the left-leaning Star-Ledger board has endorsed this cycle, following Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff). In all three cases, the Republican candidates declined to compete for the endorsement at all, with specific frustration directed at Tom Moran, the Star-Ledger’s editorial page editor.

“When Tom Moran builds a hospital in Sierra Leone or employs 1,600 people in South Jersey let me know,” Healey campaign manager Theresa Velardi said in response to this morning’s endorsement. “He and Andy Kim are two far left radicals out of step with reality. They’re perfect for each other. Also, Tom seems really angry. I suggest he take a yoga class.”
