Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York) will increase his workload in the 117th Congress after securing a seat on the House Budget Committee.

Sires will retain his seat son the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he serves as chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, and on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.

“Last Congress, the Budget Committee looked at numerous important issues that impact millions of Americans and the federal budget, including immigration, poverty, climate change, and heath care systems,” Sires said.  “The Budget Committee will have an important role to play as we work with the Biden administration to effectively respond to the pandemic and its economic impacts.”

Sires is the only New Jerseyan on the panel.

“I am eager to get to work to enact real change for my constituents and meet the needs of families across the country in this challenging time,” he said.

Several New Jersey House members have added additional committee assignments this year.

Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) and Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) joined the House Homeland Security Committee, and Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) was added to the House Education and Labor Committee.

Sires a nine-term congressman, is a former New Jersey Assembly Speaker and West New York mayor. He won his 2020 primary election with 70% of the vote and a margin of 43 points and took 74% in the general election.
