Troy Singleton, the majority whip of the New Jersey State Senate, today became the first Democratic officeholder to support Rep. Andy Kim for the U.S. Senate.
Kim announced this afternoon that he would challenge three-term incumbent Bob Menendez in the Democratic primary. Menendez was indicted on federal bribery charges on Friday.
“Last night, I joined Andy in his call for Senator Menendez’s resignation. We both agree – along with many other state leaders – that the public deserves better,” Singleton said. “Andy in the Senate would be spectacular for New Jersey, and especially Burlington County and South Jersey.”
Singleton also indicated some interest in succeeding Kim as the congressman from New Jersey’s 3rd district next year.
“As with any major decision, whether I choose to run for Andy’s Congressional seat is a discussion I will need to have first with my family,” he said. “I love being a senator and representing my bosses in the 7th district, and I am humbled to be considered for this tremendous opportunity.”
Singleton, 50, served as an assemblyman from 2011 to 2018 and is currently seeking his third term in the State Senate. He’s a former New Jersey Turnpike Commissioner and had been an official of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters union.
