Republican Senate candidate Hirsh Singh said he’d support President Donald Trump approving military operations within the state of New Jersey.
“I agree with President Trump. We are a nation of laws. Law and Order must be restored. We must protect peaceful protestors, law enforcement, businesses, innocent bystanders, and personal property,” Singh said in a post on Facebook. “If Gov. Phil Murphy continues to fail to protect the aforementioned and fails to deploy the National Guard, I support President Donald J. Trump invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 to send in the US Military and Protect America.”
Protests against police brutality have sprung up across the nation in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.
Floyd, who is black, died after now-former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned his neck with a knee for nearly nine minutes.
New Jersey has had its share of protests, and while most have been peaceful, protests in Trenton and Atlantic City turned riotous on Sunday, and a protest in Asbury Park that remained peaceful throughout Monday turned violent after officers in riot gear attempted to enforce an 8 p.m. curfew.
Gov. Phil Murphy said his office was aware of 21 protests planned for Tuesday.
