In the race to pick a Democratic opponent against Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), businessman Joe Salerno has expanded his lead to 241 votes against attorney Tim Alexander in the too-close-to-call 2nd district.

Salerno picked up 23 more votes in Salem County on Monday evening, with Alexander increasing his total by 14.

That puts Salerno ahead, 13,401 to 13,160, with Alexander trailing by seven-tenths of one percent.

Carolyn Rush gained eleven votes in Salem, and Rodney Dean increased his total by seven.  Rush now has 6,523 votes (21.3%), with Dean at 1,192 (3.4%).

Cumberland County had been scheduled to count more votes this evening, but they inexplicably moved their next tally to Saturday.

Gloucester and Cape May counties are expected to count more ballots on Tuesday, with Atlantic County scheduled for a count on Wednesday.

Salerno had begun today with a 227-vote lead and saw his margin increase earlier today after 24 more votes were added to the Ocean County tally.

Additional votes were expected after this afternoon’s deadline to receive later-arriving, postmarked vote-by-mail ballots, followed by a tally of provisional ballots.
