Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) posted strong fundraising numbers over the last three months but continues to burn through his campaign cash.
Payne raised $147,053 in the second quarter of 2019 and has $92,002 cash-on-hand, according to reports he filed with the Federal Election Commission.
He spent $83,326 during the last three months. Payne raised $176,891 and spent $141,097 so far this year.
Among Payne’s disbursements were $12,000 to his cousin, Eric Payne, for political consulting services. The Newark Democrat also kicked in $5,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
Payne won his 2018 re-election campaign by 155,062 votes, defeating Republican Agha Khan by a 88%-10% margin.
After Democrats won control of Congress in last year’s mid-term election, Payne became chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery. He also holds a seat on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.
