The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 has endorsed Herb Conaway, a longtime assemblyman from Burlington County, for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district.
“Dr. Conaway has spent his career fighting and protecting working people and families — whether that was serving our country with distinction in the armed forces, tending to medical patients or representing the residents of New Jersey in the General Assembly,” said Greg Lalevee, the general manager of the politically potent building trades union.
Conaway, the chairman of the Assembly Health Committee and a legislator since 1998, is one of five Democrats seeking to succeed Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown). Kim is leaving the House after three terms to seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
In the June 4 primary election, he faces Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel), civil rights lawyer Joe Cohn, seafood business owner Sarah Schoengood, and teacher Brian Schkeeper.
We know in Washington that Herb will fight to protect our rights to organize and will support funding for our most critical infrastructure projects back home,” Lalevee said. “These values are the hallmarks of an elected official that Operating Engineers can count on, that is why he can count on our support this election.”
Local 825 supports candidates from both parties and backed Republican Thomas MacArthur (R-Toms River) when he sought an open House seat in 2014, after backing Rep. John Runyan (R-Moorestown) two years earlier. In 2020, a Local 285 executive, former Burlington County Freeholder Kate Gibbs, sought to challenge Kim; after Gibbs lost the primary, the union supported Kim for a third term.
