Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) has won the endorsement of Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver for his re-election bid in New Jersey’s 10th district.

The first Black woman to serve as Assembly Speaker and to win statewide office, Oliver lives in East Orange, which is part of Payne’s district.

“Donald Payne, Sr., was one of my heroes and a true mentor to so many others who shared his commitment to public service, and his son Donald Payne, Jr., has distinguished himself by carrying on that legacy of delivering for working people,” said Oliver.

Oliver praised Payne’s record since going to Congress in 2012.

“From getting legislation passed and signed to make Medicaid cover essential cancer screenings, to creating thousands of quality middle class jobs by writing the House version of President Biden’s infrastructure bill, to keeping our communities safe by providing federal resources for law enforcement, Congressman Payne is a fighter and a champion for Essex, Hudson and Union counties,” she said.

Payne faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from Akil Khalfani, a sociology professor at Essex County College, and mountebank vagabond Imani Oakley.

Payne also has the endorsements of U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, East Orange Mayor Ted Green and Hillside Mayor Dahlia Vertreese.   He’s also running the table on labor union endorsements and has the backing of former CWA state director and progressive legend Hetty Rosenstein.
