The New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association has endorsed Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) for re-election, giving him the backing of the state’s largest law enforcement union in a House race of national significance.
“Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. has consistently demonstrated an unwavering support for law enforcement in New Jersey,” said Peter Andreyev, the state PBA president. “From his time in the state legislature to his current role in Congress, Tom has been an advocate for our officers. He has fought for legislation that ensures the safety of our communities and provides for the needs of our law enforcement personnel.
Kean won a unanimous vote of the state PBA delegates in his bid for a second term in New Jersey’s 7th district. He faces Democrat Sue Altman in what has been viewed as one of the most competitive congressional races in the nation – and one that could determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives.
The endorsement was expected. The state PBA endorsed Kean in his campaigns to unseat Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in 2020 and 2022.
“Our partnership has been vital to building stronger communities in NJ-07,” said Kean. “I remain committed to firmly standing with the brave and dedicated men and women of law enforcement by continuing to advocate for their priorities in Washington and making sure they have the resources necessary to continue to keep our communities safe.”
The New Jersey PBA represents over 31,000 police officers.
Kean has wrestled away blue-collar unions from Democrats, winning endorsements from the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council and Operating Engineers Local 825; the New Jersey AFL-CIO decided to stay out of the race.
