N.J. GOP warns Democratic Socialist victories in New York signal leftward shift in New Jersey Democrats

The New Jersey Republican Party is pointing to a string of Democratic Socialist victories in New York as evidence that the Democratic Party’s progressive wing is gaining influence throughout the region, including in New Jersey, where Republicans say activist-driven politics are increasingly shaping the party’s direction.

The warning comes one day after Democratic Socialist-backed candidates scored a series of primary victories in New York, results that Republicans say demonstrate the growing influence of the party’s left wing and its ability to challenge establishment Democrats.

“The Democratic Party of New Jersey is being pulled further left by activists and political extremists,” said NJGOP Chairwoman Christine Giordano Hanlon. “The party that claims to represent working families is increasingly controlled by voices that embrace division, excuse radicalism, and prioritize ideology over common sense.”

Yesterday, three House candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won primaries in safe Democratic districts: two self-described Democratic Socialists, Claire Valdez in NY-7, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, who ousted Rep. Adriano Espaillat in NY-14.  Mamdani also backed Brad Lander, who ousted Rep. Dan Goldman in NY-10.

“New Jersey Democrats aren’t just moving left. They’re racing there,” Hanlon said.

Hanlon pointed to several Democratic congressional candidates as evidence of what she described as the party’s leftward shift, singling out Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-Glen Ridge) in the 11th district and Dr. Adam Hamawy’s primary victory in the 12th.  She also sought to add Rebecca Bennett, a moderate Democrat, to that group.

She criticized Hamawy for positions she said included defending the “Blind Sheik,” Omar Abdel-Rahman, while supporting the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security, and cuts to military spending.

Hanlon also linked Mejia to the progressive agenda of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while accusing Bennett of embracing progressive policies, supporting efforts to impeach President Donald Trump, and favoring higher taxes.

“The same movement reshaping New York politics is gaining ground here in New Jersey. Candidates like Mamdani, Hamawy, and Mejia aren’t outliers,” stated Hanlon, the Monmouth County Clerk.  “They’re the future of today’s Democratic Party.”
