A second round of top Republican officials and party leaders in Cape May County has come out in support of developer Curtis Bashaw’s campaign for U.S. Senate, further cementing Bashaw as the Cape May GOP’s preferred candidate in this year’s Republican primary election.
“As a conservative, it is important to me that our party recruit and support candidates who believe in the founding principles of our nation and the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution,” Cape May County Commissioner Melanie Collette (R-Middle Township) said in a statement. “Curtis Bashaw meets that standard… It’s time to run to win this U.S. Senate seat, and Curtis Bashaw gives Republicans the best chance to beat Tammy Murphy or some other extreme, woke Democrat in the fall.”
Collette, who is also the county party’s vice chairwoman, was joined in her endorsement today by fellow County Commissioner Will Morey (R-Wildwood Crest), the mayors of Middle Township and Stone Harbor, and Republican municipal chairs in Upper Township, North Wildwood, Avalon, West Wildwood, and Stone Harbor.
Bashaw, a resident of Cape May City, had previously received endorsements from Cape May GOP Chairman Michael Donohue, the county’s three state legislators, and a bevy of local elected officials and party chairs; nearly the entire county Republican organization is now on Team Bashaw.
But Bashaw will likely need to expand his support outside of his deep South Jersey base in order to win the Republican nomination. His main primary opponent, Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner, has begun building a more North Jersey-focused coalition; other candidates, including former News12 reporter Alex Zdan, are still considering entering the race.
