A majority of Americans back the impeachment of former President Donald Trump and support his conviction by the U.S. Senate, according to a new Monmouth University national poll released today.
“There is somewhat more agreement that Trump did something wrong than there was with the first impeachment,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. “But there are still a good number of Republican stalwarts who continue to stand with the former president regardless.”
The Monmouth Poll shows 56% of Americans approve of the vote by the U.S. House of Representatives vote to impeach Trump, while 42% disapprove.
The poll shows a majority of Americans (66%) believe the 2020 election was fair and that the votes were accurately counted. Nearly two-thirds of those polled (65%) say Joe Biden won the contest “fair and square,” while 32% say his victory was a result of voter fraud.
“A number of ostensible leaders in the Republican Party continue to peddle this false narrative and many more who know this claim is wrong have not been particularly outspoken in disavowing it,” Murray said. “Their fellow partisans in the American public are simply following that lead.”
More than 63% say that it’s time to move on now that Biden has taken office, while 32% say they will never accept Biden as their president. Slightly more than half the country (52%) think the Senate should convict Trump, while 54% say they should not. 57% would back a permanent ban on Trump running for office again, while 41% oppose it.
Trump departed office with an upside-down 41%-56% approval rating, according to the Monmouth Poll.
