Indicted U.S. Senator has not said if he will seek re-election

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, who is under indictment, has a significant $8,553,019 in his campaign warchest as he weighs whether to seek re-election in 2024.

Menendez raised $919,105 during the third quarter of 2023 and spent $203,918.

The Justice Department unsealed an indictment against Menendez on September 22, charging him with bribery and conspiracy.  New charges alleging that he illegally acted as an agent of a foreign government were added last week.

He has not said he will seek another term next year, but most Democrats believe he has no path to victory.

During the final week of September, after the indictment was announced, Menendez’s fundraising fell off.  But he did receive scattered contributions – some could have been in the mail before the charges against him were filed – from Lockheed Martin ($6,000),  the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Free Syria PAC, the Californians for Freedom PAC, the Engineers Political and Education Committee, American College of Cardiology PAC, New Bergenline LLC, Federal Home Loan Bank Senior Vice President Lawrence H. Parks II, Belleville Zoning Officer Frank DeLorenzo, and Thomas Walsh, a Westfield attorney.

Developers Thomas and Scott Heagney, partners at an upscale Hackensack shopping plaza, gave Menendez a combined $13,200 on September 29.
