Rik Mehta has won the organization line in Essex County in his bid for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination to take on Cory Booker.
Mehta, a former U.S. Food and Drug Administration official, has now won organization lines or endorsements in 15 counties.
He has party support in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Union and Warren counties.
His chief opponent, Hirsh Singh, has organizational lines in Atlantic, Cumberland, Ocean and Cape May.
While Essex is overwhelmingly Democratic, the state’s second-largest county has the 10th most number of Republicans in the state.
Bergen County Republicans have still not announced intentions regarding the organization line. Their GOP convention originally set for last night has been cancelled.
There is no path for Singh to be on the line in Bergen. Mehta won a vote of the policy committee, defeating Singh, 41 to 12. Bergen will either award the line to Mehta or hold an open primary.
