Malinowski tells Kean to ‘stand up for women’

Kean responds that he’s pro-choice with restrictions, and calls Malinowski an extremist

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade quickly became an issue in the closely-watched race for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th district, where Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) is telling voters that a Kean win – and a Republican majority in Congress – will result in a bid to pass a national abortion ban that could overturn New Jersey’s law legalizing abortion.

“Kean’s last vote in the New Jersey State Senate was to reject the codification of Roe at the state level.  Kean has one last chance now to prove to New Jersey’s women that he recognizes their full and equal rights — by pledging to support federal legislation restoring the settled law the Supreme Court shredded today,” Malinowski said.  “But as on every other issue, Kean will likely choose silence.”

But Kean, the former minority leader of the New Jersey State Senate, did have a response to Malinowski’s statement.

He says he’s pro-choice, but with some restriction, and criticized Malinowski for being an extremist.

“I stand with the vast majority of  New Jerseyans who believe in a woman’s right to choose with reasonable restrictions,” Kean said.  “The only candidate in this race with an extreme position on this issue is Tom Malinowski who has continued to vote to legalize abortions right up until the moment of birth.”

Still, for Malinowski to win a third term, he’ll need to drive a wedge between Kean and moderate, pro-choice Republican women, and energize his own Democratic base.

“We cannot go back to a time in America when women and doctors were treated as criminals or let our daughters grow up with fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers,” Malinowski stated.  “We have to elect a Congress that will protect a woman’s right to choose.”
