N.J. congressman in close race for re-election in NJ-7

Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) has $2,812,640 cash-on-hand after raising $1,137,301 between July 1 and September 30 for his bid for a second term in New Jersey’s 7th district.

That brings Kean’s total haul to $5,377,698 since winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022.

“I am grateful for the support we have received from across the state and country. With just weeks to go, these resources help get our commonsense message out to voters in NJ07— a message about securing our borders, creating safer communities, lowering the cost of living, and standing with our allies,” Kean said.  “It is clear our team has the momentum, and the resources we have will make sure every voter knows what is at stake, and just how dangerous Sue Altman’s agenda is for our district. Together, we will finish strong and deliver for the people of NJ-07.”

Altman raised more than $2.1 million in the third quarter and over $5.1 million since announcing her candidacy last year.  She has outraised Kean for each of the last three quarters, but last week declined to say how much she had in the bank; that will be available today.

Kean has benefited from independent expenditures: the GOP-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund and a PAC led by billionaire Elon Musk have both spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the race, and the CLF hit the airwaves this last week with a new ad slamming Altman as a “radical liberal.”  The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the House Majority PAC have still not spent money in this race.

Asked in a debate on Sunday evening if she thought Democrats had done everything possible to help her flip the seat, Altman responded with a thumbs-down.

Two years ago, Kean, the former minority leader of the New Jersey State Senate, ousted two-term Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) by three percentage points – Malinowski beat Kean by one point in 2020 – after being outspent by a 2-1 margin.

The 7th district, which became better terrain for Republicans in the last round of redistricting, remains one of eighteen GOP-held House seats nationally in a district that backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Neither of the independent candidates in the race – Andrew Black of the Green Party and Lana Leguia of the Libertarian Party – have reported raising any money.
