Hunterdon countywide electeds back Kean for Congress

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) unveiled endorsements today from seven Republican Hunterdon County countywide officeholders for his second campaign in the 7th congressional district.

The septet – County Clerk Mary Melfi, Sheriff Fred Brown, and Commissioners Susan Soloway, John Lanza, Matthew Holt, Shaun Van Doren, and Zach Rich – represent every countywide elected official in the county.  (Republican Surrogate Susan Hoffman is technically a judge and can’t be involved in politics except for her own re-election campaign.

“My colleagues and I work tirelessly to keep Hunterdon County the best, most beautiful county in the state,” Soloway said. “Our current Congressman has failed us every step of the way, putting his personal interests ahead of ours, and pushing a liberal agenda that would be disastrous for New Jersey. We are proud to stand by Tom Kean, Jr; we know he will represent us well in Congress.”

The 7th congressional district, held by Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) since 2019, currently contains all of Hunterdon County, as well as parts of Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union, and Warren Counties – but upcoming congressional redistricting could significantly reshape it. Malinowski defeated Kean by a narrow 1.2-point margin in 2020, and if the district remains similar after redistricting, their rematch is expected to be among the most competitive races of 2022.
