The House on Tuesday cleared a Transportation and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill that included provisions aimed at forcing the federal government to fund the Gateway Tunnel.
A number of the provisions were sponsored by Rep. Tom Malinowski
“I have little confidence that we will persuade the Administration to support Gateway out of the goodness of its heart,” Malinowski said. “Congress must step up, and today the House signaled that we will do what is necessary to ensure that the nation’s most important infrastructure project is completed.”
Among the provisions in the appropriations bill are ones boosting the funding for Amtrak Northeast Corridor grants from $650 million to $700 million and barring Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao from hiring additional political appointees until funds for projects backed by the Federal Railroad Administration, like the portal bridge, are allocated.
