Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has endorsed Mike Crispi for the Republican nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 4th district against 21-term Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Manchester).
Giuliani will be in New Jersey on Monday to headline a Crispi fundraiser.
“Crispi has the courage to take on the worst of what Washington has to offer,” Giuliani said. “He will protect our American values, stand for election integrity, and drain the DC swamp.”
A conservative podcaster, Crispi’s campaign is being directed by veteran political consultant Roger Stone. Former President Donald Trump has not taken sides in the 4th district primary.
Giuliani was once hugely popular in New Jersey. When he sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, early polls had him leading Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in New Jersey, and he had come close to running the table on endorsements from elected officials and party leaders. But Smith was not among the long list of Giuliani backers.
“He will fight the cultural marxism being promoted by the radical Democrats,” Giuliani said. “Crispi is exactly the kind (of) American First patriot our country needs and he will be a great congressman for New Jersey”
Smith began his political career as the executive director of New Jersey Right to Life and was elected to Congress in 1980 at age 27 when he ousted 13-term House Administration Committee Chairman Frank Thompson (D-Trenton).
In his for a a 22nd term, Smith has the GOP organization lines in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
