A national gun violence prevention group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has launched a 10-day, $350,000 independent expenditure criticizing Republican Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. for voting to support the gun lobby.
GIFFORDS PAC is focusing on swing voters – primarily women – on digital platforms like YouTube, CTV and OLV, accusing Kean of “supporting dangerous policies.”
In “Less Safe,” a narrator condemns Kean’s record on public safety while interspersing photos of Kean and guns, including assault weapons, and saying “we can’t trust Tom Kean to keep New Jersey families safe.”
Script: (Narrator) “Here at home, Tom Kean claims to be tough on crime. But when he’s in Washington, Kean sides with the powerful gun lobby—voting to weaken gun laws, which gives criminals and domestic abusers easier access to guns. Kean even voted to cut millions from law enforcement – making it harder for them to fight crime in our neighborhoods. Kean’s putting our police in danger – which puts all of us at risk. We can’t trust Tom Kean to keep New Jersey families safe.”
“New Jerseyans just want to feel safe, but Tom Kean sides with the powerful gun lobby to make it easier for dangerous people, like domestic abusers, to access guns,” said GIFFORDS PAC Executive Director Emma Brown. “He even voted to gut funding for law enforcement, making it harder for police to solve crimes and protect communities. Garden Staters deserve a Congressman who takes their side, not the gun lobby’s.”
Kean is seeking re-election to a third term in New Jersey’s 7th district against Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot. The district is part of the battleground for control of the House: Donald Trump won NJ-7 by one point in 2024, and Mikie Sherrill carried it by two points in last year’s governor’s race.
In 2018, Giffords PAC endorsed a Republican incumbent, Leonard Lance, in the 7th district.
