The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) has endorsed Tammy Murphy for U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary, giving her the support of another labor union that had backed incumbent Bob Menendez in past elections.
The endorsement comes from Locals 464 A, 360, 1262, 312, and 152 of the nation’s largest private sector union representing grocery, meatpacking, food processing, healthcare, cannabis, retail, and other industries.
“Murphy is a genuine champion of working people, supporting legislation that would secure hazard pay for essential workers, increase healthcare coverage for all New Jersey residents, ensure healthcare staffing levels are appropriate for quality care, and help bolster workplace protections for grocery workers,” the international union said in a statement issued for the five locals. “With Tammy Murphy in the U.S. Senate, workers across the Garden State will know they have someone fighting for them in Washington, D.C.”
The UFCW pointed to Murphy’s support of “the need to deschedule marijuana and support common-sense legislation like the SAFER Banking Act, which is a critical step toward a more secure financial future for cannabis workers.”
Two local officials, Flemington Councilwoman Adrienne Fusaro and Clinton Township Councilwoman Molly Padmos, also endorsed Murphy.
“Over the last six years, Tammy Murphy has repeatedly shown her ability to get things done for New Jersey, from cultivating the state’s film industry to improving maternal and infant health to ensuring more female entrepreneurs receive economic support through her Golden Seeds initiative,” they said. “Tammy is unafraid of the big issues and has publicly taken positions in support of Medicare for All and President Biden’s student loan forgiveness program.”
The endorsements come in advance of Sunday’s Hunterdon County Democratic convention.
