Just over a week after delegates at the Somerset County Democratic convention endorsed Rebecca Bennett for the 7th congressional district, a big group of top Somerset Democrats are following suit.
Officially endorsing Bennett’s campaign today are Somerset Democratic Chair Peg Schaffer and Vice-Chair Joe DeMarco; County Commissioners Paul Drake (D-Hillsborough), Elizabeth Graner (D-Bernards), and Melonie Marano (D-Green Brook); County Clerk Steve Peter; County Sheriff Darrin Russo; and Democratic State Committeemen Joel Shain and Mike Goldberg.
“Rebecca Bennett understands Somerset County and the needs of our communities,” Graner said in a statement. “She’ll bring integrity, a strong work ethic, and commitment to deliver to Washington to advocate on our behalf when she flips NJ-07 this November.”
County Commissioner Sara Sooy (D-Bedminster) had previously said she’d support Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and a Somerset County resident, after she ended her own campaign for the 7th district in January.
Bennett faces three Democratic opponents in the June primary for the 7th district, which Democrats are hoping to flip after two terms of being represented by Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield). An important part of any winning candidate’s coalition will be Somerset County, which makes up around one-fifth of the district’s Democratic primary vote.
