David Larsen, who challenged Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton Township) in the 7th district Republican primary four times, has endorsed Fredon Mayor John Flora for Congress.
Flora is one of seven Republicans vying for the chance to take on Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in the fall.
At this watershed moment in American history, we must elect the right representatives to represent the 7th Congressional District,” Larsen said. “That’s why, after careful consideration and multiple conversations with John Flora, I concluded that John is the right person for the job.”
Larsen challenged Lance in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. He was held under 40% three times and his best showing was a 54%-46% race in 2014.
The front-runner for the nomination is former Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean, Jr., who has secured organization lines and endorsements in Union, Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris, Warren and Sussex counties.
His chief rival is Assemblyman Erik Peterson (R-Franklin), who represents parts of Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren in the legislature. John Henry Isemann, a 27-year-old first-time candidate, is also waging an aggressive race.
Another candidate, 2021 gubernatorial candidate Phil Rizzo, has been beset by criticism that a now-defunct church he once led allowed him to live in a $1.65 million home in Harding that was exempt from paying property taxes. Sterling Irwin and Kevin Dorlon are also seeking the GOP nomination.
In the next-door 11th district, former U.S. Army veteran Toby Anderson announced endorsements from former Republican National Committee Vice Chair Robert Paduchik, former Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers, Kinnelon Councilman Sean Mabey, and 2021 GOP Assembly candidate Jonathan Sym.
“Toby has demonstrated in both word and deed a strong commitment to the America First agenda, our Constitution, and the time-tested values our nation was founded upon,” said Rogers, a 2017 gubernatorial candidate. “Toby Anderson has the message, and We the People can count on him.”
Anderson faces Morris County Commissioner Tayfun Selen and former Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Paul DeGroot in the GOP primary to pick a challenger for two-term Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair). Also in the race is Ruth McAndrew, a nurse and farmer.
