Democratic congressional candidate Joe Salerno unveiled an endorsement this morning from the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a major progressive union that had supported Salerno’s opponent in the June Democratic primary to take on Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis).
“Our endorsement of Joe represents our members’ desire for leaders that respect the people who really drive our economy forward,” CWA District 1 Vice President Dennis Trainor said in a statement. “Our members will work for and vote for Joe because he is uniquely qualified to bring a better and fairer future to our members and to all working families.”
During the Democratic primary contest, the CWA endorsed Tim Alexander, who ran against Van Drew in 2022 and was aiming for a rematch. Alexander, however, narrowly lost the primary to Salerno, who used his own money to overcome Alexander’s institutional advantages.
Salerno has spent the months since the primary consolidating support among Democrats and making the case for how he can beat Van Drew. Neither party currently sees the 2nd district as a top race this year, but Salerno recently released an internal poll showing Van Drew with a modest lead that he argues can be overcome.
