House candidate Will Cunningham launched a new digital ad Thursday.
The 101-second spot gives a description of Cunningham’s life story and compares him to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other progressive candidates that have ousted incumbents in safely-Democratic districts.
It also draws on ongoing protests against police brutality that have gripped the nation for weeks in the wake of the death of George Floyd, who was killed after a Minneapolis police officer pinned his neck under a knee for nearly nine minutes.
“I know what it’s like to have the odds stacked against you,” Cunningham says in the ad. “And I know what it’s like to only be 13 years old, as I was, when I had my black body thrown to the ground in Vineland by a police officer because I was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
