American Action Network (AAN), an independent conservative group closely linked with House Republicans’ campaign operation, launched two new ads this morning targeting Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) and Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair).
In the ad directed at Gottheimer, a narrator slams the congressman for his role in the ongoing House reconciliation bill debate and claims he was outwitted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Congressman Josh Gottheimer claims to be a moderate working for you, not Nancy Pelosi,” the narrator says. “[Audio clip of Gottheimer]: ‘We don’t work for a national political party, we work for our district.’ But Gottheimer sold out New Jersey. [News audio clip]: ‘They sold out pretty quick and pretty cheap.’ Then Gottheimer got rolled by Pelosi again. [News audio clips]: ‘Nancy Pelosi has once again gotten what she wanted here.’ ‘Ms. Pelosi took Josh and his moderate pals to the cleaners.’ Tell Josh Gottheimer it’s time to put up or shut up: oppose Pelosi’s tax and spending scam.”
The Sherrill spot also focuses on the House reconciliation bill, but since Sherrill – unlike Gottheimer – has not played an outsized part in the negotiations, the ad’s arguments against her are more generic.
“Liberals spend your money, but take care of themselves,” the ad’s narrator says. “It’s a cynical Washington game. $200 million for a park in Pelosi’s district. Special tax breaks for Hollywood, the media, elite liberal universities. Millionaires can even get write offs to buy fancy cars with Chinese parts – all while they’d force a massive tax hike on small businesses, and working people pay more but get less. Tell Mikie Sherrill to oppose Pelosi’s tax and spending scam.”
Sherrill isn’t the only House Democrat being targeted by the ad; a nearly identical spot is also running against another ten potentially vulnerable Democrats around the country.
According to AAN press secretary Cally Perkins, the group is spending $200,000 on the Sherrill spot and $121,000 on the Gottheimer spot. And while Gottheimer and Sherrill are the only New Jersey Democrats to be the subject of TV and digital ads so far, AAN said they’re also running phone ads against Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) and Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes), New Jersey’s other two Democrats who may be facing competitive races in 2022.
