New Jerseyan Mehmet Oz is still holding his lead in the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

Oz is 1,206 votes ahead of his closest rival, David McCormick, a former Undersecretary of the Treasury in the Bush administration.  More than 1.34 million votes were cast in Tuesday’s primary election.

The Pennsylvania Department of State said on Thursday that about 17,000 GOP primary ballots remain uncounted.

Oz, a cardiovascular surgeon and television celebrity, has lived in Bergen County for most of his life.  He has a home in Cliffside Park and voted in New Jersey as recently as November 2020.  His New Jersey voter registration remains active, although he has not voted in the state since moving to Pennsylvania last year to run for the Senate.

With just .08% of the vote separating the two, 31.16%-31.09%, the race is likely to go to a recount.  Pennsylvania has an automatic recount law for statewide elections is the margin is less than or equal to 0.5% of all votes cast.  The deadline to complete a recount is June 7.
