U.S. Senator Cory Booker’s annual seven-day, 21-county Jersey Summer Road Trip comes to an end today with final stops in Essex and Mercer counties.
He will preside over a community violence intervention summit with the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association. In addition to other mayors, Booker will be joined by Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark).
Booker began his political career in Newark in 1998, ousting incumbent City Councilman George Branch to represent the city’s Central Ward. He was the mayor from 2006 until 2013, when he won a special election for U.S. Senate following the death of Frank Lautenberg.
Each summer, Booker traverses the state on a summer road trip to visit each county in the state.
In Mercer County, Booker will take part in a roundtable discussion with local business leaders in Princeton’s Special Improvement District hosted by State Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick).
Yesterday in Cumberland County, state and federal agriculture officials joined Booker to announce Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) grants during to a visit to Eastern Fresh Growers in Lawrence Township.
“This federal investment from the Inflation Reduction Act will empower rural enterprises to embrace renewable energy solutions and be more energy efficient,” Booker said. “This funding will go a long way to not only lower energy costs, but also foster a cleaner, more sustainable future for all our communities.”
Booker also met with business leaders in Cape May City and with seniors who live in public housing operated by the Brick Housing Authority.
He started his statewide tour on Friday with stops in Bergen, Union, and Warren, followed by Hudson, Monmouth, and Sussex on Saturday, Somerset, and Middlesex on Sunday, Camden, Hunterdon, Morris, and Passaic on Monday, and Atlantic, Burlington, Gloucester, and Salem on Tuesday.
