Hotelier Curtis Bashaw won the Middlesex County Republican convention tonight, easily outdistancing three other candidates and emerging as the front-runner in the race for the U.S. Senate seat held since 2006 by indicted Democrat Bob Menendez.
Bashaw former Tabernacle Mayor Justin Michael Murphy, 117-16, with former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan finishing third with 7 votes. U.S. Navy veteran Albert Harshaw received 3 votes.
Another major candidate, Mendham Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner, opted not to participate in Middlesex.
In 2020, Middlesex cast 5.1% of the total statewide Republican primary votes.
Bashaw won the backing of the Middlesex County GOP screening committee last month by a wide margin.
Bashaw received 29 votes (67%), followed by Mendham Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner with six votes (14%) and former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan with five votes (12%). Two votes were cast for Brian Jackson and one for former Tabernacle Deputy Mayor Justin Michael Murphy.
Six other Republicans are seeking the Republican nomination, including Cresskill businessman Fred Schneiderman.
