Businessman Larry Wainstein launched his third bid to unseat North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco in a May 2023 non-partisan municipal election.
“Too many North Bergen residents feel like local government isn’t working on their behalf, Wainstein said his announcement. “Our current administration has been in power for nearly four decades. Whatever could have been done by now, should have been done by now. It is time for new energy, new ideas, and new leadership.”
Wainstein promised new schools, increased protection for renters, updated infrastructure and greater transparency.
“I am committed to bringing change to North Bergen,” he said.
Sacco defeated Wainstein by margin of more than 2-1 in 2019.
In that race, Sacco led his slate – North Bergen elect five commissioners – with 8,907 votes; incumbent Julio Marenco finished fifth with 8,393 votes, with Wainstein placing sixth with 4,103.
In 2015, Sacco beat Wainstein in a head-to-had by 32 percentage points and by a vote of 8,246 to 4,246.
Neither candidate has announced their candidates slates. With Marenco expected to go to the State Assembly, Sacco will have at least one new running mate.
