Former Lyndhurst school board member Chris Musto launched a campaign for the state Assembly in New Jersey’s 36th district Tuesday.
A Republican and retired Homeland Security official, Musto dropped a short bid for Bergen County sheriff earlier this year. Musto said he hopes to focus on public safety should he be elected.
Democrats have fully controlled the district since 2006, though President-elect Donald Trump won the district by about 4.5 percentage points earlier this month (that number could tick up or down by the time results are certified). The 36th district encompasses about 10 Bergen County municipalities and dips into Passaic County to include Passaic City.
“I’m excited to bring my experience and commitment to public service to the New Jersey General Assembly,” Musto said in a release. “The safety and security of our communities were a top priority during my career in Homeland Security, and I know how important it is to keep our neighborhoods safe. That’s why I’m running — to make sure that our communities have the strong, effective representation they deserve in Trenton.”
Musto also lost a 2017 bid to be a Lyndhurst councilman.
Assemblymen Clinton Calabrese (D-Cliffside Park) and Gary Schaer (D-Passaic City) represent the 36th district. Calabrese and Schaer have filed for reelection.
The last Republican to win the 36th was former Assemblyman Paul DiGaetano in 2003, but Musto believes he can change that.
“Voters are looking for change, and I believe I can deliver that,” Musto said. “I have a proven track record of leadership and a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to the people of this district. I’m ready to get to work and make a real difference in the lives of our citizens.”
