New Jerseyans have cast 493,414 ballots in advance of next week’s election, including 65,563 in-person early votes, bringing the total statewide turnout so far to 8.2%, according to an analysis by Ryan Dubicki, an elections researcher for the Associated Press.
The total votes cast includes 427,851 vote-by-mail ballots already recorded as received by county election officials. That represents a return rate of 45.7% of more than 965,000 ballots mailed by county clerks.
On Monday, 19,080 voters cast their ballots on the third day of early voting. That represents a 25% increase over the first three days of early voting in 2021.
For the purposes of calculating statewide voter turnout, the New Jersey Globe has deducted the 462,845 inactive voters from the statewide registration total of 6,499,539 votes.
County clerks issued roughly 12,000 more mail-in ballots this year than last year, an increase of about 1.3%.
Noteworthy among returned ballots is the 1st district, where Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) has a rematch with Republican Claire Gustafson, former Collingswood school board member, 71,265 votes have already been cast, including 68,854 VBM ballots; that’s the largest in the state and more than 49% more than the next highest district.
The rematch between Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) and former Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) has already attracted 47,700 advance votes in New Jersey’s 7th district the second-highest total in the state. That includes 8,547 in-person early votes, the most in the state.
In NJ-3, where Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) is battling Republican businessman Bob Healey, Jr., 44,981 advance votes have been cast; that includes 8,295 in-person early votes.
The 5th district rematch between Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) and Oath Keepers fan Frank Pallotta has brought in 32,798 advance votes, including 6,316 early votes cast in-person.
In the 11th district, 39,715 advance votes have been received in the race between Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) and Republican Paul DeGroot, a former Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor. That number includes 7,276 early votes cast in person since Saturday.
