New Jersey adds 8,500 new voters in July

New Jersey added 8,473 voters in July, but Democratic and Republican registrations both dropped, the New Jersey Division of Elections reported today.

The new total number of voters – 6,706,438 – comes before the state began purging noncitizens from the voter rolls as part of the recent voter registration controversy that added 6,600 noncitizens to the list of registered voters.  Gov. Mikie Sherrill says that was caused by a computer software glitch at the Motor Vehicles Commission.

Democratic registration dropped by 535, and Republicans dropped by 401 last month.

New Jersey now has 882,179 more Democrats than Republicans, down from the one million mark in July 2020.  That advantage fell below a million in April 2023.  There are now 192,986 more Democrats in the state than unaffiliated voters.

The New Jersey voter rolls are now 38.3% Democratic, 25.2% Republican, and 35.4% unaffiliated.

The state reports that the total number of voters who opted to join the Natural Law Party increased by 17, even though the Natural Law Party has been defunct since 2004.

In the closely-watched race for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th district, Democrats gained 180 new voters, and Republicans lost 43.
