New Jersey had 732,625 votes had already been cast in today’s general election before the polls opened at 6 AM, a little more than 11% of all registered voters – or 12% of all eligible voters.

The number includes 29,426 vote-by-mail ballots that were marked as returned as of late Monday, bringing the total number of early VBMs received to 524,762.  It also includes 207,863 early votes that were cast by machine between October 23-31 during the state’s maiden early voting period.

According to an analysis by the Rebovich Institute of New Jersey Politics at Rider University, 58.9% of all early votes were cast by Democrats, 22.9% by Republicans and 19.1% from unaffiliated voters sometimes referred to as independents.

Democrats returned 61.6% of mail-in ballots, and Republicans returned 58.2% of them.  Unaffiliated voters returned their VBM ballots at a rate of 31.8%, the analysis shows.

New Jersey has 6,575,904 registered voters, but 575,441 of them are inactive.

Polls close at 8 PM this evening.
