More than 59,000 New Jerseyans have already voted in this summer’s primary election, according to analysis from Associated Press researcher Ryan Dubicki.
About two weeks into the vote-by-mail process, 41,625 Democrats and 17,039 Republicans have returned their absentee ballots. As of Friday, the absentee ballot return rate sits at about 8.2% for Democrats and 9.9% for Republicans.
The data isn’t flawless—Dubicki notes that Middlesex County hasn’t entered many of the ballots into its system, as no law requires election officials to provide immediate updates. Other counties may hold similar backlogs.
The South Jersey vote-by-mail operation is in full swing: the only county with more than 6,000 ballots returned is Camden County, with 12,593 returned ballots. Other South Jersey counties—including Cape May, Cumberland, and Gloucester—so far have higher return rates than most other counties in the state.
Six Democrats and five Republicans are seeking their party’s nomination to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy. All 80 Assembly seats are also up for grabs, with some feisty primaries in the works.
In the 32nd legislative district, a Hudson County race with six Democratic candidates, 588 Democrats have returned their ballots, good for about a 6.8% return rate.
In the 39th’s GOP primary, 453 Republicans have sent their ballots in for a 9.1% return rate.
More than 686,000 New Jerseyans have requested an absentee ballot for the June 10 primary, per Dubicki.
