McCabe says Thompson must go through the process to gain support of Middlesex Democrats

State Sen. Sam Thompson (D-Old Bridge) may be switching parties, but Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe isn’t committing to supporting him for re-election as a Democrat.

“There is a process for anyone looking to seek the Middlesex County Democratic Organization endorsement, one that hears the voices of all of our county committee members and ensures the principle of one person, one vote,” McCabe said on Monday.

Thompson, an 87-year-old former Middlesex County GOP Chairman, said last night that he planned to switch parties and seek another four-year term as a Democrat.  Thompson has been a GOP legislator for 26 years.

McCabe suggested that he will rely heavily on the willingness of Democrats in Old Bridge to accept Thompson, a conservative who was a Donald Trump delegate in 2016 and 2020, as their Senate candidate.

“We will work with our communities in the 12th district throughout the nominating process and ensure the eventual nominee, and the Democratic party, are in the best possible position for victory this November,” McCabe said.
