Election Day opens with 9% turnout after over 370,000 votes were cast early

A total of 372,461 votes have been cast in advance of today’s primary election in New Jersey, according to an analysis by VoteHub.  The polls open on Election Day with turnout already at 9%.

Democrats cast 291,080 of those votes, 78% of the statewide total; 80,979 (22%) came from Republicans.

Of the statewide tally, 284,626 votes were cast by mail-in ballots; 81% were from Democrats and 19% from Republicans. In all, 87,835 in-person early votes were cast across the state between May 26-31: 60% from Democrats and 31% from Republicans.

Among Democratic primary voters in New Jersey’s 12th district, where twelve candidates are vying for the open seat of retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing),  42,540 votes were cast in advance of Election Day; 20,822 from Middlesex (49%), 11,032 from Mercer (26%), 9,138 from Somerset (21%), and 1,548 from Union (4%).

In the 7th district race to pick an opponent for two-term Rep. Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) in one of the most competitive House districts in the nation, 38,444 advance votes have been cast in the Democratic primary: 9,744 from Union (25%), 8,655 from Hunterdon (23%), 7,637 from Somerset (20%), 5,382 from Warren (14%), 4,632 from Morris (12%), and 2,394 from Sussex (6%).

Turnout ahead of Election Day is 17.5% in the 12th district and 19.4% in the 7th.
