32BJ Service Employees International Union, a major property services union, endorsed both Jersey City Councilman James Solomon and Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea for the Jersey City mayorship on Thursday.
The dual endorsement comes as a field of candidates looks to succeed Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who is running for governor. 32BJ SEIU Vice President and New Jersey District Director Ana Maria Hill said both candidates have shown they can work on behalf of working-class people.
“Both Councilman Solomon and County Commissioner O’Dea are proven fighters for working people,” Hill said in a release. “They both stand up for Jersey City essential workers fighting for their fair share of the city’s economic gains, as well as tenants demanding safe, secure and affordable places to live.”
32BJ SEIU’s executive board voted to endorse both candidates, according to the release.
“For decades, I have stood shoulder to shoulder with labor, and as Mayor, my commitment will never waver,” O’Dea said in the release. “We will make Jersey City a place where working families can afford to live, where unions are respected, and where every worker gets a fair shot at success.”
“It’s an honor to receive the endorsement of the working women and men of 32BJ,” Solomon said. “32BJ members make Jersey City run, and without them, we would not be the city that we are. As Mayor I will have their backs.”
32BJ SEIU represents more than 15,000 workers in New Jersey.
Other candidates in the race include former Jersey City Board of Education President Mussab Ali, former Gov. Jim McGreevey, and Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman.
